Eyelid Surgery

Our eyes are the most expressive feature of the face; we express our emotions through them and use them to communicate information to those around us. Shakespeare once said that, “eyes are the window to the soul,” and when our eyes begin to give us a tired or sad look it can change the impression we leave on those around us.

That tired look that we see in our eyes when we reach a certain age can be easily and discreetly corrected. Restoring the youthfulness of your eyes through eyelid surgery will help you to recapture your previous fresh, healthy look. You will appear younger and more rested, and your eyes will be more vibrant and alert without changing their natural shape. –Dr. Hernandez

Reasons to consider blepharoplasty with Dr. Hernandez

Often times, when people in their 40’s and 50’s will look in the mirror, they begin to see the inevitable, natural signs of aging. They might notice wrinkles, puffiness and excess skin in the upper eyelids, or notice fatty bags or extra skin, dark circles, loss of elasticity, and fine wrinkles below the lower lid. This loose skin may cause the lids to droop. Sometimes this droopiness will appear to hang over the eye appearing fatigued, and in some cases will impair your vision—a problem that can persist when the brow has descended over the eyelid area.

If this is the case, you are a quintessential candidate for a consultation for eyelid surgery called blepharoplasty with Dr. Hernandez.

When Dr. Hernandez performs blepharoplasty, she restores the anatomy of the eyelid while also preserving the eye’s natural shape and retaining full function of the eyelids. Cosmetic surgery with Dr. Hernandez will help you recapture a more youthful, natural look that will leave you feeling rejuvenated and self-confident.

During your consultation with Dr. Hernandez, she will discuss your specific wants and needs, and evaluate the best course of action for you. Additionally, she will explain the effects of aging, the toll of gravity, and the resulting loss of skin elasticity around the eyes.

Dr. Hernandez’s approach to blepharoplasty

Presently, blepharoplasty procedures are performed by preserving some fat tissue so the eye will not appear hollow, resulting in a more natural look. During your procedure, Dr. Hernandez will carefully remove excess fat and reposition the rest to recreate a fresher appearance. Using her expert surgical skills, she makes all her incisions within the natural fold of the upper eyelids and just below the eyelashes of the lower eyelid in order to better disguise the surgical incisions. These incisions are imperceptible once healed.

In some cases, when patients are experiencing brow droopiness or ptosis, Dr. Hernandez can reposition the brow with a forehead lift to further improve this situation. During your consultation with Dr. Hernandez, you may wish to discuss having blepharoplasty cosmetic surgery in conjunction with a facelift and/or a brow lift. Eyelid surgery is performed in Dr. Hernandez’s accredited Boca Raton outpatient plastic surgery facility.

Recovery from blepharoplasty with Dr. Hernandez

Your scheduled blepharoplasty with Dr. Hernandez will be performed as an outpatient procedure under twilight sedation, allowing you to go home after you recover.  After surgery, you will be able to see normally, however you will need to be accompanied by someone who can drive you home afterwards.

In regard to post-surgical care, Dr. Hernandez recommends that you frequently apply cold compresses to your eyes to keep the swelling to a minimum, and will supply you with eye drops to moisten your eyes. You will return to the office the next day for a post-operative examination with Dr. Hernandez, and again for suture removal between the second and fifth day.

“My patients might have a slight swelling and experience minimal discomfort,” says Dr. Hernandez. “I strive to ensure that the recovery period is quick and fairly benign.”

Back to work, looking better

Patients typically can return back to work and normal routine after one week; however we advise that you avoid strenuous exercise for three to four weeks after the surgery.

“The most important goal for my patients is for them to feel better, appear natural, younger and fresher,” notes Dr. Hernandez.
