When going for plastic surgery, it’s important to find the Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that’s right for you. This involves checking for board certification, training, experience, reputation, and making sure their before/after photos inspire confidence. It also means making sure you’re comfortable with them.
What makes someone comfortable will vary depending on the individual. The factor we’ll be looking at in this article is gender.
Before we continue, it’s important to note. This article isn’t going to be about how women are better than men. We’re not interested in a Battle of the Sexes. Instead, we’re going to focus on the fact that people feel more comfortable when their plastic surgeon matches their gender.
The vast majority of plastic surgery patients are female, which explains a recent study by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery showing that over a quarter of patients prefer female plastic surgeons.
It’s important not to overemphasize the results of this study. It looked at 200 female patients, a drop in the bucket when you realize that one in five American women are either getting plastic surgery or planning to do so.
The fact remains that an overwhelming majority of the patients who cared about gender wanted a female plastic surgeon.
Some of the reasons for gender preference are obvious. Medical procedures necessitate a certain level of vulnerability, which can be uncomfortable if your surgeon is of the opposite gender.
But there’s another one you may not have realized. According to the same study we cited above, female plastic surgeons spend more time with patients than their male colleagues. This is important, because more time spent with a patient translates into more empathy and understanding.
While it may sound nice to have a quick medical appointment, plastic surgery can have long-lasting consequences. It’s worth taking the time to do your homework before undergoing a surgical procedure. Surgery is a serious commitment, and getting the right person to do your surgery is vital if you want to be able to celebrate a younger, better-looking you.
